Paris Calling - Parisian rock compilation announced

tagged , , , , , , , , , , and

Paris CallingParis Calling is a collection of the most exciting new bands from the Paris rock scene
Released in the UK on 12 March 2007 through Because Music

At the end of 2003, a strange crowd started to talk up arms in the basements of Paris. A solid group of friends formed, kids covered in guitars and carried along by a new faith, started to gather and spread the good word: rock, pure, hard and wild was back in teenage hearts.

A spontaneous generation? No, these youngsters, born at the dawn of the nineties, at the same time as the techno tidal wave, force fed by MTV on R’n'B, clean new wave rap and the boys bands, would, at the age when they most need absolute certainties, take three final massive blows to the head. The Holy Trinity Strokes/Libertines/White Stripes and three seminal years, from 2001 to 2003 would change their lives for ever. The damage was done. The raw energy of the guitars, the lopsided, urgent emotion of these vibes had contaminated them.

They got mad keen, sought out old vinyl records, discovered Dylan, the Stooges, the Ramones. Then they went for it. Three tuneless chords and a few bad waves of the wand later, and it was an epidemic. They stuck together, bound by strong friendship, and the watchword for their solidarity became “all for all”. Their unofficial concerts were the scene of fake exorcisms and collective trances. Starting with cover versions that they could massacre, they moved on with the first compositions of their own towards a tighter garage rock; they worked, kept at it, improved, without worrying about what anyone would think.

By 2005, after a headlong charge, they had all found their colours, and were now distinguishing themselves by more nuanced influences. They discovered 60s pop, rhythm’n'blues, soul and the psychedelic scene. Possessed, fully signed up converts, these youngsters are now inhabited by an implacable faith and, like their Hellboy elders, can proclaim “I don’t need anything else”. Rock’n'roll is a religion: here are its new disciples. The “Paris Calling” compilation is the first studio album by this new scene. Each group has provided 2 original titles recorded in the studio.

Tracklisting:
1. Second Sex / Lick My Boots
2. Plastiscines / Shake
3. Les Shades / Like I’m A Man
4. Brooklyn / Heart Lies
5. The Hellboys / Besoin De Rien
6. The Parisians / Why Choose One Side
7. The Rolls / Time
8. Plastiscines / Rake
9. The Parisians / The City
10. Brooklyn / Clandestine
11. Les Shades / L’Enfant prodige
12. The Hellboys / Burn it down

Monsieur R in court for incitement to riot

tagged , , , and

One of the rappers who was blamed by certain politicians for inciting those riots that took place in France at the end of last year is in court this week in another dispute with a French MP. Monsieur R, real name Richard Makela, is facing three years in prison or a 75,000 euro fine if UMP MP Daniel Mach is successful in his legal action against the rapper.

Of particular contention is Makela’s 2004 album ‘Politikment Incorrekt’, and more specifically the lyrics and video for the track ‘FranSSe’. In that track Makela raps: “France is a bitch, don’t forget to fuck her till she’s exhausted/You have to treat her like a slut, man” and “I piss on Napoleon and on General de Gaulle”, while in the video he is dressed as a gendarme with two naked women rubbing against the French flag.

Buy Anticonstitutionnellement by Monsieur R from Amazon.co.uk

On hearing the album Mach proposed a law making it a criminal offence to “insult the dignity” of France and the French state. When the rioting began in certain French cities last November other politicians also expressed their opposition to Makela, and six other French hip hop acts, who they said had helped incite the violence through their lyrics. By that time, however, Mach had already begun the legal action that has reached court this week. The MP accuses Makela of “making and disseminating violent and pornographic messages to which minors could get access”.

Makela continues to deny that he has behaved in an improper way through his music. At the time of last year’s riots he told reporters: “Hip hop is a crude art, so we use crude words. It is not a call to violence”.

L’Union fait La Force!

tagged , , , , and

Choosing the right show is never easy, but here at Labels we’ve really decided to test you this Tuesday night by bringing in two of France’s hottest rising talents at opposite ends of the capital…

In the West, in the left corner (or should that be ‘on the left bank’) you’ll find YANN TIERSEN, the man behind the soundtracks for AMELIE and more recently GOODBYE LENIN, as well as his own album L’ABSENTE, which was released a year ago. You won’t want to miss this rare opportunity to see his extraordinary multi-instrumental live show which you’ll find at LONDON’s SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE…

Unless, of course, you cross the city? In which case…

In the East, in the right corner (or maybe, of course, ‘on the right bank’), you’ll find M83, celebrating the ongoing word-of-mouth campaign that the good British public has been doing on behalf of their debut UK release, DEAD CITIES, RED SEAS & LOST GHOSTS. They headline LONDON’s 93 FEET EAST, and also release a new single, 0078h, on December 1st. You’ll also find them in Dublin tonight and Nottingham on Wednesday, as well as performing live on Radio 1’s One World show on Thursday evening.

You makes your choices, you takes your picks. Either way, it’s time to brush up on your French…

A demain…

SOURCElabs - 16 Classiques de 1995 à 2002

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

Back in 1995 Source released their first compilation album, Sourcelab 1, calling in favours from the new downtempo French artists that had come to the fore in the 90’s. Two more compilations followed, Sourcelab 2 and 3, featuring the now internationally successful laid back electronic pioneers like Air and Daft Punk. This album is the distillation of the best of those compilations.

This collection has jazz tinged sixties echoes alongside brooding urban menace, soul snippets and funk riffs, scratching and samples galore. From the sweet beginnings of ‘Espéce Funk’ through to the disco madness of Daft Punk there is a barely a common thread between the tracks, but nonetheless, the whole album manages to gel into a magnificent whole.

‘16 Classiques…’ is a fine primer if you want to get into downtempo and an excellent buy if you already are. The UK version of the album also comes with an additional disk of bonus material from current Source artists.
