Lattitude Festival - July 12th – 15th 2007, Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk (Tickets)

MUSIC ARENAS

*ALBERT HAMMOND JR* *RODRIGO Y GABRIELA* *TINIWAREN* *WALLIS BIRD* KARIMA FRANCIS*

Latitude Festival just gets bigger and better with new additions being added daily to the already staggeringly impressive line-up.

Joining the abundance of talent is dapper Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr who is enjoying a stint of solo success with the release of his debut album ‘Yours To Keep’. Released through Rough Trade, his music is under-stated yet sentimental and heartfelt. His beautiful melodies and a sweet voice make Albert Hammond Jr a welcomed addition to the Uncut Stage at Latitude.

Headlining the Uncut Stage on Saturday night are the fast-fingered, Dublin-based Mexicans Rodrigo Y Gabriela. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both world and rock, and often imbued with Hispanic, classical influences. But their life-long passion for metal and classic rock make them mind-blowing acoustic guitarists who really sound quite like no other.

Expanding the breadth of genres that the festival encompasses, Latitude is please to announce that the BBC Award for World Music winners Tiniwaren are confirmed to play. Their unique fusion of Toureg folk songs with electric guitars, has earned them the description ‘The Rolling Stones of the desert’ and has made them a part of a musical heritage that includes early US bluesmen and generations of desert singers and musicians.

Last year’s Latitude festival showcased some of the very best in up and coming acts and this year is no different with bright new artists and bands playing alongside more established names. Confirmed so far are 23 year old Irish born folk/rock/jazz singer Wallis Bird and Manchester-based sultry singer songwriter Karima Francis.

Headlining this year’s event on the main Obelisk Stage, Latitude are pleased to announce Dublin born global phenomenon, Damien Rice for the Friday, the Damon Albarn-fronted and super-cool The Good, The Bad And The Queen for Saturday, and the epic, and euphoric Arcade Fire closing the festival on Sunday night.
Also confirmed for the festival so far are: Jarvis Cocker, Wilco, CSS, The Rapture, The National, The Magic Numbers, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Midlake, Gotan Project, Patrick Wolf and Explosions In The Sky

Jarvis Cocker to be next curator of Meltdown

tagged , , , , , , and

Jarvis Cocker is to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Patti Smith, Morrissey, John Peel and David Bowie and will curate this year’s Meltdown festival, which will take place as usual at London’s South Bank Centre in June.

Cocker explained his plans for this year’s event thus: “I think the main thing is to mix things up; things that maybe shouldn’t go together, I’m hoping to get a weird mix of contemporary things and revivals of old stuff; and as much as possible that involves audience participation to a degree. I’m hoping to get some film stuff together. There will be high culture there, and low culture; some very low”.

The South Bank Centre’s Glenn Max, 6Music: “Jarvis seemed such an obvious choice. He has the right temperament; he pays the right kind of attention to the world, and has championed many different things. He has the right sense of humour, playfulness, and mischief”.

Jarvis Cocker up for Eurovision

tagged , , , and

Jarvis Cocker, not to be outdone by fellow Brit Morrissey, has said he would like to write a song for Europe. Following the news that the BBC have been in talks with the former Smiths frontman, plus other high profile British acts, to provide tracks for the Eurovision Song Contest, Cocker has said that he too would like to help raise the standard.

He told BBC Five Live, “I’m not going to compete with Mozzer if he’s going to do it. I’m sure he’ll write something good. The door is always open if they want to ask me. I’ve always wanted to write one for them. Maybe I’ll do it next year.”

Jarvis Cocker solo track released on MySpace

tagged , , , and

Talking of things related to Live 8, Jarvis Cocker has released a new song via his MySpace page, and that’s probably the only place you’re going to hear it as it’s not exactly radio-friendly, containing, as it does, the use of the word ‘cunt’. I’m pretty sure we reported on his plans to release the track earlier on in the year, but I can’t find any trace of the report, so maybe I imagined it. But you’d think that I would remember that he was planning a song entitled ‘Running The World’ and featuring the lyric “cunts are still running the world”, wouldn’t you?

Anyway, it’s the first track he’s released under his own name, and you can hear it at myspace.com/jarvspace. On the page, he writes: “If all the technical bits and pieces are working properly then you should be able to hear a new song I’ve been working on I wanted you to hear it now cos it’s exactly one year since that Live 8 thing and it was the night of that event that I wrote this song.”

Summing up my thoughts on the matter, he continues: “I apologise for all the swearing but sometimes that’s the only thing that seems appropriate. It’s in no way a criticism of Geldof & co but I remember thinking at the time: ‘Where does engaging with these politicians/businessmen really get you?’ - (12 months on & the cunts still haven’t paid up as far as I can make out) - maybe the problem is something more … fundamental.”

He adds: “Anyway, what do I know? I’m just a pampered rock star - but at least I think it’s good to discuss this stuff. Don’t you?”
