Global Cool enlist big names to combat global warming

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , and

Global cool logoThe worst effects of global warming can be avoided if one billion people reduce their carbon emissions by just one tonne a year, for the next 10 years, according to Global Cool, which launches today at the British Museum.

This solution presented by Global Cool is based on scientific research that the climatic tipping point – beyond which the climate becomes irreversibly unstable – can be put back if we reduce the global CO2 emissions by one billion tonnes a year - from the 26.5 billion tonnes (rising at 0.5 tonnes per year) currently emitted on an annual basis. By pushing back this tipping point, the campaign will buy time to develop cleaner, renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, water, hydrogen, bio-mass and geo-thermal power.

With the support of famous names from the world of entertainment, such as KT Tunstall and Josh Hartnett, who attended the conference today, Global Cool will empower a community of individuals to deliver the solution to the problem of global warming through positive collective action. Platinum-selling recording artists are booked to take part in a season of ‘cool’ web casts on global-cool.com. An exclusive Scissor Sisters concert can be viewed online now, and the series will continue with Maroon 5, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs and The Fratellis later in the year. Global Cool will also be present at and supported by the V Festival in England, Oxygen in Ireland and T in the Park in Scotland, as well as a further year of support from Fuji Rocks in Japan and other International festivals to be announced.

Meanwhile, the website carries advice on how to be ‘cool’ by reducing energy consumption through doing simple things such as sharing a shower or walking to work. People will also be encouraged to offset any surplus energy they use by purchasing a ‘Tonne of Cool’ via the Global Cool web site.

The Sunshine Underground 2006 UK tour dates

tagged , , , , , , , , , and

The Sunshine Underground - Craig (22), Stuart (22), Daley (24) and Matthew (22) - are four likely lads from Shrewsbury who came together, Megazord-like, in Leeds (the Northern city famed for cheeky chappies Peter Sutcliffe and The Kaiser Chiefs). Together, they form the rhythm colossus known as The Sunshine Underground.

Like a fever you actually want to catch, the Sunshines’ following has spread as the band have sold out London and Leeds on their first headline tour. This follows successful support slots for LCD Soundsystem and countless sweaty local rave-ups, which earned the group the Live Band of the Year trophy at the Leeds Music Awards.

Their debut single, ‘Put You In Your Place,’ was released on City Rockers on July 18th after winning Zane Lowe’s Fresh Meat competition and since then the boys have toured up and down, leaving a trail of danced-out fans basking in their anthemic afterglow. Their second release, ‘Commercial Breakdown,’ earned even more kudos from the likes of Lowe and the NME, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing. In addition to their hectic live schedule, the boys are in and out of the studio recording with Dan Kahuna (FC Kahuna) as well as Steve Dubb (Chemical Brothers) and Seggs (The Ruts), who have also been in with Bloc Party and Roots Manuva. The boys are looking to finish the album in March for an early autumn release before departing for more live dates, including the spring/summer European festival circuit. Live favourites Borders, Panic Attack, and My Army have already gone under the knife, as well as a few nameless newies.

Bringing a danceable sensibility to the regionally-accented angular guitar antics so popular at the moment, The Sunshine Underground are the tip for 2006.

The Sunshine Underground are:

Craig Wellington (vox / guitar)
Stuart Jones (guitar)
Daley Smith (bass)
Matthew Gwilt (drums)

Kaiser Chiefs Ricky Wilson hit by a car

tagged , , , and

Chief Kaiser Ricky Wilson was hit by a car whilst walking through his hometown of Leeds at the weekend. The incident itself sounds relatively serious, but the singer is apparently not badly hurt, suffering only from a broken toe and some bruising, according to a statement on the band’s website.

The statement explained that Wilson was legitimately making his way across a pedestrian crossing when the vehicle approached, and he was forced to jump to try and avoid it. He hit the windscreen, however, and “flipped over the top” of the car.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the hit and run incident occurred at around 10pm on Sunday in the Hyde Park area of Leeds and that Wilson was taken to Leeds Infirmary but released a short time later. “There’s not a lot of detail other than he was hit by a small car - that’s the only description anybody’s been able to give,” she added.

The band’s statement went on to say: “He would like all of you to know he’s OK. He’s the luckiest man alive, because he is still alive. It sounds daft, but a ‘Ricky trademark jump’ has probably saved his life. The jump meant he was flipped over the top of the car, hitting the windscreen, rather than getting trapped under it. He was crossing on a green pedestrian light.”
