27th - 29th June / Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire
4th – 6th July / Abersoch, North Wales

TICKETS ON SALE: Friday 29th February at 9am

Wakestock 2008, Europe’s largest and most successful wakeboard music festival, is proud to announce Groove Armada, The Streets, Supergrass, Funeral for a Friend, The Hoosiers, Hadouken, Young Knives, Metronomy, Jazzie B and Audio Bullys plus a load more are all confirmed to perform this year. Not only this, but Wakestock, sponsored by Relentless Energy Drink, have also announced a second date and a new prestigious location within the amazing grounds of Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, from 27th – 29th June 2008. It is the first time that a contemporary music festival has been held within the grounds of Blenheim Palace and the Wakestock organisers are thrilled to have found such a fantastic venue for their second festival.

Now in its 9th sell out year, Wakestock Abersoch, North Wales (4th – 6th July 2008) and the new Wakestock Blenheim Palace promise to serve up a double helping of strong rip roaring music, world class wakeboarding, on-site camping and a weekend full of exhilarating on and off water entertainment. Better than that, whichever Wakestock visitors choose this year, the best scenery and the coolest festival sites are guaranteed.  Abersoch boasts stunning beaches with some incredible shore breaks, and the site at Blenheim Palace sits within the awe-inspiring Parkland next to the picturesque lakes.

Wakeboarding is the world’s fastest growing watersport with over 3 million participants worldwide. Wakeboarding began back in the 1970’s when surfers who were bored of waiting for the waves began pulling their boards behind a speedboat with a ski rope. The summer equivalent to snowboarding, wakeboarding has now grown hugely over the past 10 years and is no longer the little brother of the boardsports world. If you add on the wakeskating community you have a boardsports family that outnumber surfers by more then two to one.  The riding you see at Wakestock includes an elite selection of some of the world’s best riders, you get the opportunity to see them throw down massive tricks, and hit some of the biggest slider rails in any competition right in front of the crowds. The spectators are able to see every slide, every trick and every stack whilst standing only metres away from the action – wakeboarding at this level is an awesome spectator sport.

“2008 is going to be the Year of Wakestock!” says Wakestock Founder, Mark Durston. “We’ve built the festival up over the last 8 years in Abersoch to be a really cool mix of the world’s best wakeboarders, bands & DJ’s right at the forefront of the live music scene and a lifestyle that is unrivalled by any other festival! With the help of Stuart Galbraith, CEO of Kilimanjaro, to develop the festival and to add a second venue as stunning as Blenheim Palace was an opportunity we’ve relished. The grounds at Blenheim Palace, as a festival venue, are first class. Add to this a stunning lake sat right in front of the Palace and you have the perfect setting to showcase the coolest sport on water”.

The creator of Download and Wireless festivals, Stuart Galbraith, believes Wakestock represents the future of festivals: “Everyone knows the British festival calendar is getting busier each year and promoters need to deliver more than just a good stage line up. Wakestock combines this package with its programme of world class wakeboarding, music and full on entertainment that music artists have been keen to sign up to”

It’s the first time that Blenheim Palace has played host to such a unique event and Chief Executive, John Hoy, believes that the World Heritage setting provides an ideal backdrop for Wakestock “We are delighted to have the opportunity to add this exciting event to our calendar and to stage an event geared specifically for the younger audience who will attend. We are really looking forward to working closely with the organisers and to welcoming all visitors to the event”.

Tickets will officially go on sale on Friday 29th March at 9am with a “weekend” ticket priced at £85 and a “weekend with camping” ticket at £110 (booking fee and P&P not included)

Cover ArtWall Of Sound is delighted to bring together names as respected and diverse as Infadels, The Gossip, Shy Child, Soulwax and DFA 1979 for this new compilation album which celebrates the musical revolution that is Shock Rock.

Rough Trade Counter Culture 2006 (CD Review)

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

Rough Trade Shops - Counter Culture 2006As you’d expect from the vinyl Mecca that is the Rough Trade store this compilation of their best of 2006 contains a vast spread of music. As a sampler of what is out there this hits out hard at people who complain about the state of music these days (you know who you are!) and neatly packages up 46 fine examples of innovative, passionate, beautiful, powerful and mind blowing music from the last year.

Beginning with the more sedate mood of the first CD there are tracks to sink into like a plush sofa. The calming and beautiful tracks from The Last Town Chorus, Oneida and the sublime, if on the surface unlikely, combination of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan sit with ease with the jaunty Camera Obscura, Peter Bjorn and John and Lily Allen. The tempo increases as the cd progresses and makes for a highly uplifting experience. A similar progression is to be found on CD2 except that ambiance gives way to synergy of rock, dance, rap and electronica as Uffie and Ladybug lead us into CSS and Gossip. If there were there any doubt about the rich tapestry of sounds out there today they this knocks them into the proverbial cocked hat.

A truly brilliant compilation that inspires and invigourates.

Rough Trade Shops: Counter Culture ‘06 details

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

RELEASED JANUARY 29TH

Here we are again - the annual round up of the most exciting music that has passed over the shop’s counters throughout the previous 12 months - a portable version of the shop’s recommendations, solicited by you, our loyal customers, on a daily basis, requested as from a trusted friend.

As with each of the annual collections, an exciting and unique blend appears, one that can only occur in this one 12 month period, the new styles that appear, the recent trends continuing and old school influences resurfacing in surprising places - who’d have predicted the acid house sound muscling in on the new wave of post punk scene!?!

From the meditative piano pulse electronics of Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto to Hush Arbors’ Velvet Underground-influenced psyche-rock sorcery, from Lily Allen’s helplessly upbeat 70’s cockney ska biscuit to Peter Bjorn and John’s super hooky space pop, from Scritti Politti’s hip hop lullaby to Crystal Castles’ lo-fi and no-wave slo-disco, and from Erase Errata’s politically-savvy skronky dance punk to Xerox Teens’ messed up pneumatic noise - we have the best of everything here, the hottest bands around, old friends returning in fine style and strong support from a host of highlights from the last fiddy two weeks.

Monkey Swallows the Universe’s melancholic indie-pop, Ladybug’s favela-electro, Ripchord’s son rock (in opposition to dad of course), Burial’s grime-score, soundtracking the urban sprawl, Treecreepers powerpop resurrection, Uffie’s crystal clear fembot pop, Wolf Eyes’ sonic tornado - the list goes on and on and on and on.
2006 was a frightenly diverse year for music, and while it may be confusing for those who liked it when it was just skins, punks and greasers, well, they will just have to try and keep up keeping up.

The third release in the trilogy that includes the deluxe double CD and book THE RECORD SHOP: 30 YEARS OF ROUGH TRADE SHOPS, a special limited CD edition of COUNTER CULTURE 1976, the COUNTER CULTURE 06 2CD bookends the first thirty years of Rough Trade Shops in fine style.
