Return of the Rave?

tagged , , and

According to the Guardian the police have reported a recent significant rise in the number of illegal “rave” parties being held in the UK. Akin to the famous raves of the late eighties and early nineties, police are now reportedly monitoring websites and phonelines believed to be guiding party goers to illegal gatherings.

The Guardian reports: “Officers are warning landowners and the public to be on their guard after receiving intelligence that large raves may be being planned for weekends in August, particularly over the bank holiday”. Apparently police in the South West fear that a particularly big gathering is being planned in Devon or Cornwall, while other police forces have reported using the Tories famous 1994 anti-rave legislation, or newer ASBO laws, to close down illegal parties.

The Guardian reckons the possible rebirth of rave culture may be a “rebellion against ‘chav culture’” which, some say, has taken over the once credible dance clubs. Others reckon that it might be a sign of a swing back towards dance music as those cool kids get bored with an indie heavy scene dominated by “the likes of Coldplay”. Or, of course, it might be that legitimate clubs and festivals are just getting too damn professional (and expensive) - parties of the shambolic, illegal and really quite dangerous nature often proving much more fun, especially if you’re so fucked on drugs you don’t notice all the bad stuff associated with such events. Either way, International DJ Clubs Editor confirms that: “Rave has been bubbling under since its heyday - every so often there’s a new influx of young people who get into it. This year there has been a huge rebirth.”

Eavis suggests all festivals go the Glastonbury ticketing route

tagged , , , , and

Following that call by the government earlier this week for the live music and ticketing sectors to work together to combat the growing trade of online ticket touting, Glastonbury man Michael Eavis has said he thinks more promoters should be adopting the strict ticketing systems his festival uses.

As you all know, after years of fence hopping and fraudulent ticket sales at Glastonbury, a few years back bosses there introduced a number of new measures to better control access to the festival, leading to one of the most sophisticated ticketing systems in the live sector. Tickets are sold to named individuals, and ticket holders must bring photo-ID with them in order to get on site. The aim is to not only stop the sale of fraudulent tickets, but also to stop people buying tickets to the always sold out event with the intent of reselling them on at a large profit.

Speaking to BBC 6music this week, Eavis says that Glastonbury might step up ticket security even further next year, and he urged other promoters to take similar steps. Eavis: “We seem to be ahead of the field on it which is rather weird - me being a rather humble dairy farmer from Somerset! But it really really bothers me when people buy a Glastonbury ticket for 120 quid, and sell it for 600. A lot of other promoters don’t seem to mind what happens to the tickets afterwards, but it does really bother me.”

Creamfields granted licence despite opposition

tagged , , , and

Creamfields was yesterday granted its licence, despite opposition from local residents who fear disruptive noise levels.

As previously reported, the annual event is moving venues this year. Previously it was staged at the Liverpool Airfield site in Speke, but redevelopment there means it can no longer be used. The Cream possee have secured a new site in Daresbury, near the North West town of Warrington, but as they went through the process of securing a licence from the local authority to stage the event there, a number of local residents began to air their concerns. Meanwhile a neighbouring council urged officials considering the licence proposal to turn it down on the grounds that the event risks bringing unacceptable levels of noise and an increase crime and anti-social behaviour to a semi-rural setting.

Get Creamfields tickets now from Ticketmaster.co.uk

One of the 100 local residents who attended the council hearing considering the licence application this week told reporters: “I believe the proposed event and the influx of people on such a large scale has the potential to do untold harm to the community. We have nothing against Creamfields, but it is a Merseyside-based commercial operation. Do they really care about the area in which we live, other than as a site for this event?”

Nevertheless, officials awarded the event its licence, meaning the festival will now definitely go ahead on the Daresbury site over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Festival organisers, who hope to make the Daresbury site a permanent home for Creamfields, have pledged to consider local residents’ concerns in the way they stage the event.

Tiny riot at Download Festival

tagged , , , , , , and

Since Mean Fiddler stepped up security at the Leeds bit of their Carling
Weekend, the festival season has lacked a good riot, so presumably it was
with that in mind that a handful of Download festival-goers went on a
mini-rampage on Sunday night as the rock weekender reached a close. About 12
people were detained by police after trouble broke out. Police were called
to the site following reports of fires being started, and when they arrived
they were set upon by a barrage of “missiles” (bottles and things, I’m
guessing - I’m assuming no cruise missiles were involved here). Police say
that some of those detained might face charges of assault or criminal
damage, and to that end they appealed for anyone who caught the incident on
their mobile phones to hand over pictures or video footage.

It’s not entirely clear what kicked off the violence, though it’s possible
the rioting minority were annoyed at just how well behaved most of the rest
of the 75,000 people at the event had been. In fact, prior to the mini-riot,
police had commended Download-goers for their good behaviour - with only
four arrests having been made at that point. And even headliners Guns n
Roses seemed to participate in the good mood of the proceedings with Axl
Rose et al being joined on stage by former and somewhat estranged bandmate
Izzy Stradlin - who, for the second time in a month, joined the new Guns n
Roses line up to play guitar on three songs. Of course, I say Rose was
entering into the general good mood of the festival - that didn’t stop him
storming off stage on several occasions - but who’d want to watch a Guns n
Roses gig without some drama queen antics from the frontman? (Unless, of
course, yesterday’s gossip about Axl was true and he was going off stage for
an oxygen top up - in which case presumably he was more wheezing off stage
than storming).

Anyway, back to the mini-riot. Commenting on the incident, Festival Director
Stuart Galbraith told reporters yesterday: “There were 75,000 people per day
at the event, and up until last night, there had been no major incidents
over the weekend. The trouble involved a small number of otherwise fantastic
customers who attended this massively successful event. This type of trouble
is very rare and is completely out of character for Download fans.”

Radiohead go for single album deals in future

tagged , , , , , , , , and

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has told Rolling Stone magazine that his band intend to stay without a long term recording contract. Radiohead, still one of the biggest bands in the UK of course, have not entered into a new record deal since their contract with EMI ended last year. Yorke now says that the band intends to look for single album deals as and when new long players are ready for release, rather than pursuing a long term relationship with any one record company. That is an approach Yorke has taken with his debut solo album, ‘The Eraser’, which is being released by Beggars imprint XL via a one album deal.

Confirming that intent to Rolling Stone’s David Fricke, Yorke said that the only downside of being without a long term record contract was that the band lacked a rigid deadline: “My big problem with corporate structure is this bizarre sense of loyalty you’re supposed to feel-towards what is basically a virus. It grows or dies, like any virus. And you use it for your own selfish ends. Jonny [Greenwood] had a big problem with the fact that we didn’t have any obligation - a release date or anything. He found it difficult to work in a vacuum. Which is one of the reasons why we chose to go out on tour: ‘This is something we can work toward’. It’s human nature. Personally, I don’t have that. But I can see why, if you’re a group of people, you need it.”

UK Mission to conquer US

tagged , , , and

Representatives from 21 UK music companies will next week be joined by Britain’s new Trade & Industry Secretary, Alistair Darling, on a ‘trade mission’ to the US. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not - I used to live in Alistair Darling’s constituency and he always struck me as a very sinister looking guy, a bit like a Bond villain, though perhaps less so now without the beard. Still, the Americans seem to love evil Brits, so perhaps sending a Bond villain over to promote the UK independent music sector is a clever move.

Anyway, this is the latest mission thingy from the UK’s Association Of Independent Music and UK Trade & Investments. Among the companies taking part in the mission are IE Music, Mnemonics Music and Heavyweight Management. As well as support from Dr Evil, the mission is also backed by the American Association Of Independent Music.

Commenting on the mission, Darling told CMU: “The British music scene is flourishing with artists like Coldplay, James Blunt, KT Tunstall and Franz Ferdinand helping to spearhead a reemergence of British musical talent Stateside. This mission will further help British music be exported abroad. I want smart British ideas to be picked up early and nurtured so that they benefit the UK as a whole. In a fast changing global economy and even faster changing music scene we have to support UK companies that have a competitive edge. I am delighted to see so many companies on this mission that are trying something new. The creative economy is now worth over 11 billion to UK plc supporting 2 million jobs. It produces a higher proportion of the UK’s total wealth - 8% of GDP - than anywhere else in the world.”

Monsieur R in court for incitement to riot

tagged , , , and

One of the rappers who was blamed by certain politicians for inciting those riots that took place in France at the end of last year is in court this week in another dispute with a French MP. Monsieur R, real name Richard Makela, is facing three years in prison or a 75,000 euro fine if UMP MP Daniel Mach is successful in his legal action against the rapper.

Of particular contention is Makela’s 2004 album ‘Politikment Incorrekt’, and more specifically the lyrics and video for the track ‘FranSSe’. In that track Makela raps: “France is a bitch, don’t forget to fuck her till she’s exhausted/You have to treat her like a slut, man” and “I piss on Napoleon and on General de Gaulle”, while in the video he is dressed as a gendarme with two naked women rubbing against the French flag.

Buy Anticonstitutionnellement by Monsieur R from Amazon.co.uk

On hearing the album Mach proposed a law making it a criminal offence to “insult the dignity” of France and the French state. When the rioting began in certain French cities last November other politicians also expressed their opposition to Makela, and six other French hip hop acts, who they said had helped incite the violence through their lyrics. By that time, however, Mach had already begun the legal action that has reached court this week. The MP accuses Makela of “making and disseminating violent and pornographic messages to which minors could get access”.

Makela continues to deny that he has behaved in an improper way through his music. At the time of last year’s riots he told reporters: “Hip hop is a crude art, so we use crude words. It is not a call to violence”.
