Don’t Look Back Concerts announce first dates for 2007 - Sonic Youth, Slint and House Of Love

tagged , , , , , and

Daydream NationIn August 2005, ATP introduced a new season in London called “Don’t Look Back” inviting artists to present a retrospective of one of their works in its entirety. We kicked off the season with The Stooges performing Fun House from start to finish in one amazing show at the Hammersmith Apollo that saw grown men cry. The season finale was the inimitable Dirty Three (with special guest pianist, Nick Cave) performing the stunningly beautiful Ocean Songs at The Barbican.

Since then, we have seen seminal albums performed including Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub who stirred up a melting crowd at The Forum, Tindersticks playing the exquisite Tindersticks II at The Barbican and Ennio Morricone proving why he is The Maestro as he lead 200 musicians through his classic film scores at the Hammersmith Apollo.

Don’t Look Back Concerts is proud to announce the first dates for our 2007 season.

DAYDREAM NATION
… was Sonic Youth’s sixth album - their first double, clocking in at 70 minutes - and their last for indie label Blast First. Having debuted the raw material at US shows in June 1988, it was recorded in July & August, previewed on a brief European tour in September and released in October ‘88.

Arguably their most commercial release of the six (since then others ‘Dirty’, ‘Goo’, ‘Sonic Nurse’, ‘Rather Ripped’ have competed for that accolade), it saw the band consolidate their inimitable style and drew a huge amount of major label interest, resulting in a multi album deal with Universal. From the anthemic ‘Teenage Riot’ through to ‘Eric’s Trip’, ‘Total Trash’, ‘Candle’, the Joni Mitchell/Jimi Hendrix tribute ‘Hey Joni’ and Kim Gordon’s intense ‘Cross The Breeze’, the album contains some of Sonic Youth’s best known songs, clamorously requested at every show since.

Rolling Stone and Spin hailed ‘Daydream Nation’ one of the best albums of the 80s. Widely Rated as their Magnum Opus it appears to this day in many Best Album polls. The intervening years have seen Sonic Youth go from strength to strength, both in their wide openess to the ‘new’ and ‘experimentation’ and their ability to draw attention and to entertain. The prospect of this historic album being performed live in its entirety 19 years down the line, is exciting indeed! A two-disc deluxe edition of ‘Daydream Nation’ with bonus tracks, liner notes, and additional material is planned for release in June 2007..

“When I first heard Daydream Nation - I thought ‘what is this music…?’ It was raw, abrasive and reminded me of the Stooges and the Velvets. But nothing else sounded quite like it and it quickly took over to become one of my favourite records ever! From the gatefold sleeve to the heavy vinyl this was a lush piece of art that you took home and cherished. This was a time when CDs were alien to the kids and a few years later Slint released Spiderland. In a way their masterpiece inspired me to start the Don’t Look Back season. I would think “how do I get to see all of these songs live?” - I was obsessed. I would check the credits and even look at the run out grooves and long for them to play every last track live, so we are really honoured to kick off the season with these legendary albums and also continue the series with the faithful genius that is the House of Love performing their first LP they did for Creation.” - Barry Hogan (Don’t Look Back Concerts)

Sonic Youth - The Destroyed Room: B-Sides and Rarities (Universal)

tagged , , , , , , and

Sonic Youth have been pushing the boundaries of music for nearly 25 years now; always confounding expectations and never releasing anything that could be tagged ‘commercial’. And so in keeping with this tradition, amongst the usual Christmas rush of ‘best of’ compilations and ‘all-time greatest’ albums, they’ve decided to put out an album that’s guaranteed to completely avoid the general winter merriment.  ‘The Destroyed Room’ is a cherry-picked collection of what they see as their finest rare and unreleased tracks - 12 of them in total. It follows the release of ‘Rather Ripped’ earlier in the year, arguably one of their more accessible works, and an album that appealed to more than just the melody-absent, feedback hungry stereotype of a Sonic Youth fan. The stereotypes are likely to be pleased by this release, though, with opening track ‘Fire Engine Dream’ being a 10 minute plus, magnum opus of mind-curdling experimentation. Following this, they unleash a blast of post-rock in ‘Fauxhimians’, a delicate (by Sonic Youth standards), nearly melodious piece in ‘Kim’s Chords’ and the bizarrely named ‘Three Part Sectional Love Seat’ from the even more bizarrely named ‘Noho Furniture Sessions’. So while it’s only likely to appeal to a certain demographic of music fan - the Sonic Youth obsessive - this is a release that shows that they’re a band that are still relevant, still in their prime and still as unique as ever. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped (CD Review)

tagged , , , , and

Sonic Youth are amazing. Their ability to create compelling and fresh sounds that have immediacy, verve and passion. ‘Rather Ripped’ is another testament to that skill. There is a solid alternative rock power that pervades every song. This album contains bright jangly numbers (on the surface) to dance to like ‘Reena’, ‘Incinerate’ and ‘What A Waste’. Meanwhile there are more moody and languid tracks like ‘Do You Believe In Rapture?’ and ‘Turquoise Boy’. There is plenty of sweetness and noise for all occasions here.

Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped (Universal/Geffen)

tagged , , , , , , , and

As you might or might not know, Amanda De Cadenet currently spends her days hanging with the beautiful Nick Strokes whilst taking pictures of her alt.rock friends, including Sonic Youth, here, on the inside cover. And what a nice picture it is, but that is probably because the Youth are such nice people. Whatever, what an awesome album this is. Never afraid to put the catchy-biatch of a summer hit as track 1 (think ‘100%’), this album starts out with not one, but two belters. ‘Reena’ has a light, bass-driven flow, with tangly guitars reminiscent of good Libertines, and Kim’s voice sounds captivating. “Incinerate” follows a similar formula, and although the tune is more restrained, it is also more persistent, and Thurston’s voice sounds like J Mascis.

Get Rather Ripped on Amazon.co.uk

I have repeated this song to death, and still crave it - it’s magnificent. There are some less hypnotic moments here, but there are no ’skip-to-next’ numbers, except perhaps the two bonus tracks. It is frequently stunningly good, nor are the days of good old-fashioned NOISE abandoned wholly, as on the mesmerising and urban ‘Rats’ sung by Lee Ranaldo. A number such as ‘Jams Run Free’ has all the dark, sexy disharmony you could ever desire from Sonic Youth (which, as any fan will confess, is actually quite a lot). This album proves that in spite of age, Sonic Youth are simply one of the best things on the current rock scene. Whether the same thing can be said of Ms De Cadenet is a different question.
