Fabric - 20th March

Neon Neon, debut UK live date
Welsh musical maverick Gruff Rhys and LA based electronic/hip-hop producer Boom Bip will be lighting up London on 20th March with their first ever Neon Neon UK live date.  The headline performance takes place at the capital’s Fabric nightclub and with Chrome Hoof, Erol Alkan and Four Tet also on the bill the event promises to be a cracking start to the Easter weekend.

Stainless Style album, out 17th March
Neon Neon’s Fabric showcase comes 3 days after the release of their debut album, Stainless Style – a highly creative slice of conceptual power-pop inspired by the incredible life of the world’s first playboy engineer, John DeLorean.  Gruff Rhys and Boom Bip are joined on the record by a host of talented guests, including; Fab Moretti from The Strokes, Yo Majesty, Har Mar Superstar, The Magic Numbers and Spank Rock.  The end result was recently described as a “terrific collaboration” [4 out of 5] by Q magazine, has caused the NME to forewarn their readers to “miss it at your peril”, and been awarded 4 out of 5 reviews by both Uncut and The Observer Music Monthly.

I Lust U single, out 24th March
Neon Neon’s fully polished Stainless Style album will be closely followed by the release of their I Lust U single.  An ice cool duet between Gruff and guest vocalist Cate Le Bon, I Lust U is a lovelorn-lament underpinned throughout by Boom Bip’s stylish, snyth-lead production.  The song can be heard here, and the video viewed here.

Neon Neon are also performing at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin Texas, and further releases and Neon Neon UK live dates will be announced soon.

Old Floyd, Yeahs in China and much more

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

I’ve been away, but now I am back. I have a massive box of CD’s to review and mail account bursting at the seams with links and announcements. Better crack on I suppose..

Pink Floyd hit a little legal problem with the 40th anniversary edition of ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”. The booklet has a page just reading “This particular page has been left blank for legal reasons”, as they couldn’t get clearance for an image included in a collage by Syd. Not sure why you’d bother putting that in when you could just go on to the next collage? Anyway the high lords of prog have bundled a three CD reissue, one in stereo, one in mono and one with all the 1967 singles, some B-sides and previously unreleased versions of songs, with a little booklet containing some previously unseen notebooks from the late Syd Barrett.
The track listings are as follows for CD 1 and 2 (the stereo/mono versions of the same album remember):

1. Astronomy Domine
2. Lucifer Sam
3. Matilda Mother
4. Flaming
5. Pow R. Toc H.
6. Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk
7. Interstellar Overdrive
8. The Gnome
9. Chapter 24
10. The Scarecrow
11. Bike

While the bonus CD has the following,

1. Arnold Layne
2. Candy And A Currant Bun
3. See Emily Play
4. Apples And Oranges
5. Paintbox
6. Interstellar Overdrive (French Edit)
7. Apple And Oranges (stereo mix) Previously unissued
8. Matilda Mother (Alternative version) Previously unissued
9. Interstellar Overdrive (Take six) Previously unissued

Moving on now to something more recent. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are playing in China according to their MySpace blog at www.myspace.com/yeahyeahyeahs. Also, in case you missed it, the band’s Ep “Is Is”, err, is out now with its five videos, one for each track, co-directed by KK Barrett (Sofia Coppola films) and Lance Bangs (video director - Sonic Youth, Nirvana and producer of Director’s Cut series of DVDs - Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham. See them in the media section at www.yeahyeahyeahs.com.

Northampton based band called Bruises, fronted by guitarist (ex-departure) Lee Irons, have a single being realeased by a small independant label as a 500 run limited edition 7″ vinyl, followed by a small uk tour.  Check www.myspace.com/wakeupwithbruises for details
The Go! Team are going to release their new album ‘Proof of Youth’ on September 10th - it is all streamed from they MySpace page www.myspace.com/thegoteam - To help big it up they are playing 3 shows next week:

12 Sep 2007- Electric Ballroom - London
13 Sep 2007 - Ritz - Manchester
14 Sep 2007 - ABC - Glasgow, Scotland

Get tickets, Go see them, you won’t be dissappointed.

Siouxsie Sioux is going to play the Eiffel Tower as part of a set of gigs by Coke (cue cries of SELL OUT!!, etc) to big up the soft brown drinksmongers unsigned bands thingy. No mention of Banshees but there will also be The Magic Numbers playing Frikirkjan Church in Reykjavik. In both cases the support acts will be unsigned acts from the aforementioned ‘unsigned band thingy’ (Yes, I can’t be bothered to look at the coke site and find out. If you are interested go there yourself and find out).

The (very good IMHO) DAB radio manufacturers PURE, along with Marshall Amplification, Planet Rock and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy are going to ‘turn it up to 11’ in October by having a charity auction, called RockStarRadios (www.rockstarradios.com). You can bid for special edition DAB digital radios signed by rock stars old and new. The donors are…

{deep breath} Bill Wyman, Graham Coxon, Ronnie James, Dio, Andy Powell, Trivium, Guy Pratt, Steve Wilson, The Answer, Scott Gorham, Jon Lord, Liam Gallagher, Sandi Thom, Joe Walsh, James Dean Bradfield, Annie Lennox, Biff Byford, Nicky Wire, Mark Ronson, Bob Catley, Paul Weller, John Legend, Thunder, Steve Cradock, Ronnie Wood, Ian Anderson, Jim Davies, Mark Knopfler, Hawkwind, Alice Cooper, Jet, Phil Manzanera, Bruce Dickinson, Eric Clapton, Ray Manzarek, The Feeling, Dave Grohl, Toby Banks, Keane, Editors, Mike Rutherford, Queens of the Stone Age, The Proclaimers, Marillion, Peter Hook, Gene Simmons, Roger Hodgson, Noel Gallagher and Steve Hogarth {phew!}

One Night Only release their first single ‘You & Me’ on Vertigo on the 29th October and their debut album follows in January.

Press release

Formed in 2003 (which seems an awfully long time ago when you consider that singer George has only just turned 17), One Night Only started out as a bunch of school friends ‘just making noise’ in their rural hometown of Helmsley, North Yorkshire. They went on to spend the following two years tearing the vaulted roof off the local scene with unrefined gigs showcasing punk bastard pop way beyond their tender years. It was only a matter of time before One Night Only broke out of Helmsley. They knuckled down, wrote some songs and last October Steve Lamacq began spinning the demo of ‘You And Me’, prompting the band to really take themselves seriously. One Night Only signed to Vertigo, home of Razorlight and The Killers and then hit the road for months, supporting The Enemy, Milburn and The Coral and embarked on a jaunt around the nation’s Club NMEs.

Already a fan, Zane Lowe picked ‘You & Me’ as his ‘Hottest Record In The World’ this week and demo versions have already been played on Radio 1 and Xfm. One Night Only are also confirmed to do a session with Steve Lamacq on the 10th September. They have a busy Autumn ahead. They are currently in the studio with the legendary producer Steve Lilywhite (U2, Morrissey) putting the final touches to their debut album due for release in January 2008. One Night Only have been confirmed as support for The Pigeon Detectives UK tour, have a bunch of dates with The Rifles, more Club NME dates and a headline show at the London Barfly (full dates overleaf).

Lattitude line up news

Lattitude Festival - July 12th – 15th 2007, Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk (Tickets)

MUSIC ARENAS

*ALBERT HAMMOND JR* *RODRIGO Y GABRIELA* *TINIWAREN* *WALLIS BIRD* KARIMA FRANCIS*

Latitude Festival just gets bigger and better with new additions being added daily to the already staggeringly impressive line-up.

Joining the abundance of talent is dapper Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr who is enjoying a stint of solo success with the release of his debut album ‘Yours To Keep’. Released through Rough Trade, his music is under-stated yet sentimental and heartfelt. His beautiful melodies and a sweet voice make Albert Hammond Jr a welcomed addition to the Uncut Stage at Latitude.

Headlining the Uncut Stage on Saturday night are the fast-fingered, Dublin-based Mexicans Rodrigo Y Gabriela. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both world and rock, and often imbued with Hispanic, classical influences. But their life-long passion for metal and classic rock make them mind-blowing acoustic guitarists who really sound quite like no other.

Expanding the breadth of genres that the festival encompasses, Latitude is please to announce that the BBC Award for World Music winners Tiniwaren are confirmed to play. Their unique fusion of Toureg folk songs with electric guitars, has earned them the description ‘The Rolling Stones of the desert’ and has made them a part of a musical heritage that includes early US bluesmen and generations of desert singers and musicians.

Last year’s Latitude festival showcased some of the very best in up and coming acts and this year is no different with bright new artists and bands playing alongside more established names. Confirmed so far are 23 year old Irish born folk/rock/jazz singer Wallis Bird and Manchester-based sultry singer songwriter Karima Francis.

Headlining this year’s event on the main Obelisk Stage, Latitude are pleased to announce Dublin born global phenomenon, Damien Rice for the Friday, the Damon Albarn-fronted and super-cool The Good, The Bad And The Queen for Saturday, and the epic, and euphoric Arcade Fire closing the festival on Sunday night.
Also confirmed for the festival so far are: Jarvis Cocker, Wilco, CSS, The Rapture, The National, The Magic Numbers, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Midlake, Gotan Project, Patrick Wolf and Explosions In The Sky

But of course, Latitude is so much more than a music festival. Latitude can boast the exclusive involvement of BAFTA with Screenings, Directors Q and A’s and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger accompanied by a live orchestra; comic and satirical stars from the world of Radio and TV including Alan Carr, Stewart Lee, Mark Steel , Russell Howard and The Early Edition with Marcus Brigstocke and Andre Vincent, a vast array of authors involved in the legendary Vox ‘n’ Roll book readings and Robin Ince’s Book Club with guests Simon Munnery , Josie Long and Jo Neary amongst many others. BBC Electric Proms line up

tagged , , , , , , , and

The BBC announced today that Paul Weller will be the performer opening the inaugural BBC Electric Proms at the Roundhouse, Camden on Wednesday 25th October. In addition, The Magic Numbers, The Zutons and The Fratellis have also been announced as the final acts to complete a line up which sees over 50 artists, from genres ranging from jazz and soul to rock and pop, committed to creating new moments in music.

Paul Weller has always had a reputation for pushing musical boundaries, from his early days as leader of the The Jam (who played at the Roundhouse in the 70’s), right up to the most recent release of his ‘As Is Now’ album. For BBC Electric Proms, the man credited as the elder statesman of pop will create a one-off performance of unique collaborations with heritage and contemporary artists.  He will also perform classic tracks from his 30-year career, as well as debuting new, previously unheard material.

When asked about his BBC Electric Proms performance Weller commented, “I’ve not played at the Roundhouse since 1977 so it will be quite nice to go back. I suppose it reminds me of my youth, when I first started playing in London.”

Joining Weller on the bill will be The Magic Numbers, premiering tracks from their forthcoming album ‘Those The Brokes’. This performance will be the band’s first major UK show ahead of their tour in November.

Liverpool quartet The Zutons will be funking things up on Friday 27th October, appearing at the Roundhouse on the bill before Godfather of Soul James Brown. They will take time out before their forthcoming UK tour to perform some of the hits from their latest platinum-selling album ‘Tired of Hanging Around’.

In addition, three piece Scots indie rockers The Fratellis have also been added to the bill alongside rock legends The Who for a special performance at the Roundhouse on Sunday 29th October.

BBC Electric Proms takes place from October 25th to 29th at the Roundhouse and at satellite venues all over Camden. The event will be broadcast across a number of BBC television and radio networks including BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, 1Xtra, 6 Music, BBC Asian Network and BBC World Service. There will be extensive online coverage, and digital television viewers will be able to enjoy performances on demand at the push of the red button.
