THE GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL 2007

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

Betweenplanets was lucky enough to send Ryan, our roving reporter, to cover this years Great Escape Festival, here is what he found out for you….

THURSDAY 17TH MAY AT THE AUDIO

FEAR OF FLYING

Fear Of Flying are a three piece from London. They are made up of three young upstarts. They were playing downstairs at Brighton’s Audio. I was a bit sceptical about these young lads, although as soon as they entered the stage they proper got into it. They were just banging through their top classy tunes that were amazingly catchy. I was surprised that they were unsigned - they should be! They completely nailed their set - Got the crowd jumping to proper alternative new wave pop. These lads were well worth seeing they deserve their chance.

THE KISSAWAY TRAIL

Well this Danish band are a 5 piece and a 5 piece too many. Trying to imitate Arcade Fire but going severely wrong somewhere! It was always going to be hard to follow such an amazing set after Fear Of Flying but this was truly shocking. The crowd were split 50/50 but the severe heckling from some of the audience must have had an affect on their performance. Altogether it was a poor set and largely disappointing.

THE 1990’S

Cookies A fantastic three piece from Glasgow. I had heard a lot of good stuff about this band and I’m pleased I stayed to watch them - they were awesome! For me the best tune they played was the brand new single “see you at the lights”. They had the crowd singing back their tunes and any new band that can make that happen deserves total respect. Well worth seeing and I would encourage anyone to go get their album “Cookies” released on Rough Trade.

THURSDAY 17TH MAY AT THE PAVILLION THEATRE

THE ARCHIE BRONSON OUTFIT

So bad you barely noticed they were playing. Didn’t seem to get much appreciation from the crowd. They had no stage presence or crowd interaction. The only thing that stood out from this band was a beast of a hairy beard on the singer.

THURSDAY 17TH MAY AT KOMEDIA UPSTAIRS (1 AM GIG)

GALLOWS

I had been hearing good things about Gallows and after seeing the massive queue outside I knew they would live up to my expectations. Not the best of starts for the band as Frank Carter’s brother Steph split his head open after getting smashed round the head with his guitar during the first song. Steph disappeared to get his head sorted and for the next five minutes the band barracked with the crowd – highly amusing! Once Steph returned the band completely kicked arse - this gig was going to be intense. The highlight was the single “abandon ship”. To me this was an immense brutal gig. Gallows went down a storm.

FRIDAY THE 18TH MAY ON THE PIER (SECRET GIG)

FOALS

This was a secret gig in a pub on the pier. I had heard one song by Foals and loved it. The sound was a bit on the dodgy side but considering the venue I think you can let that issue go. They certainly got a crowd through the door. The likes of Preston from the Ordinary Boys and the Maccabees were hanging out watching the band. Poor ‘ole Preston thought he was going to get a fair bit of attention instead of Foals ……but no one cared about his presence, people were fixated on this banging live set from Foals.

FRIDAY 18TH MAY AT THE CORN EXCHANGE

THE HEIGHTS

From Wales via London. If you like you classic 1990s Indie bands, such as Embrace, then these are pretty good. However, boring to watch and slightly tame for me. They just didn’t really stand out enough. The crowd seemed to like them ….just not for me.

ART BRUT
Bang Bang Rock & Roll
THE best gig I have ever been to!! It was Bang Bang Rock & Roll’. Young Eddy Argos came on stage in a very retro 70’s shirt, trousers and socks. A band that begin every song by saying, “Art Brut… GO” and just oozing confidence. They played loads of songs - old and new. He jumped into the crowd who all worshipped this icon. This was not just a gig….. this was a lesson in life! Absolute amazing !! Makes you want to form a band…… Art Brut did just that.

SATURDAY 18TH MAY AT THE BEACH

REVERAND AND THE MAKERS

Really catchy little tunes. The beach crowd were loving ‘The Reverend’. He came across as slightly arrogant and I was unsure if this was part of the act! Respect though, he was meeting people after and giving them the time of day, unlike one other solo artist playing at this venue a bit later that evening!

THE NOISETTES

Whats The Time Mr WolfThe LOUDEST band I have ever seen - I thought my eardrums were going to bleed. Starting out at the very front I quickly retreated to the back of the venue where I could then fully appreciate these awesome performers - sporting amazing haircuts and dishing out catchy heavy tunes. People go on about Beth from the Gossip’s powerful voice….. but sorry, Shingai Shoniwa voice is a truly powerful voice with soul AND body. An ace gig.

JACK PENATE

This Young shy bloke from London left me disappointed. His sound is possibly more radio friendly but as a live performer he appeared lifeless! His repertoire for me was far too weak and all sounded the same. Hit or miss…..miss!

Fopp announce more in-stores

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

A host of great new music acts have all confirmed they will be playing free gigs at Fopp stores across the country over the coming weeks, from the dulcet tones of number-one artist Mika, to NME-favourites Switches, and the hotly-tipped Noisettes to the legends that are Fairport Convention. These in-stores demonstrate just how strong Fopp’s commitment is to its customers and to providing a platform for cutting edge music.

Please note that access to ALL these gigs is now limited. Wristbands to guarantee entry can be collected from the stores where the gig will be held from 9am on the day of the gig, while stocks last.

The first date for your diaries is Monday January 29th when flamboyant pop newcomer Mika, a sure cert to score his debut UK number one hit with the single Grace Kelly, will appear at Fopp’s flagship Tottenham Court Road store. Beirut-born, London raised Mika and his big, funny, poppy tunes is being touted by music industry weekly Music Week as the “next 21st Century superstar”. He has been likened to Queen’s Freddie Mercury and the Scissor Sisters. Catch him at:

Fopp Tottenham Court Road, Mon 29th Jan at 6pm.

Betweenplanets favourites The Noisettes are next, their music is rightly described as ‘schizophrenically contradictive: One minute rough, raw and explosively dramatic the next detatched, calm and serene. Lead singer Shingai is a provocative lady with a sublimely powerful and beautiful voice, with an in-famously provocative live performance – often climbing on to PA systems and applying tribal markings on her face. She is joined by fellow band members Dan and Jamie, two hairy guys who play rhythmic rock and sleazy blues influenced undulations. Catch them live on their tour of Fopps at:

Fopp Camden. Monday 29th Jan, 6pm
Fopp Manchester, Tuesday 30th, 6pm
Fopp Union Street, Glasgow, Thursday 8th Feb at 5:30pm
Fopp Aberdeen, Friday 9th Feb at 6pm

Next up is Nerina Pallot whose songs spin webs, catch moments, memoirs, emotions and people. As a teenager she was ‘obsessed’ by such diverse acts as Bon Jovi, the Stone Roses, Simon and Garfunkle and Carole King, she has gone on to tour with Suzanne Vega and Sheryl Crow. Nerina Pallot plays fopp stores across the country to support the new single Learning to Breathe, out on Jan 8th, from the album Fires. See her at:

Monday 29th Jan at 2pm – Manchester Fopp
Wednesday 7th February at 2pm – Union Street Fopp, Glasgow

Switches play to support the release of the new single Drama Queen, released on 29th January 2007 on Atlantic Records. “Switches spectacularly combine all that is good about British indie (new wave bounce, three part harmonies, guitars that ‘chug’) with all that is good about US indie (The Pixies, pretty much). We really don’t need to remind you how all-powerful such a record could be”. Said the NME - Oct 2006. Catch them at Fopp for free before their tour kicks off in Jan/Feb:

Fopp Union St, Glasgow, Wednesday 31st January, 4:30pm

Already booked for this year’s Wychwood Festival, The Kate Garrett Band has been building a reputation in Oxford and beyond for their intense and powerful live work. Dorset born singer songwriter Kate Garrett plays with fellow band member; Barney M. Brown, whose anarchic approach to playing cello underpins the band’s unusual sound, and has led to sessions for Billy Bragg and Simon Emmerson (Afro-celts). Their debut EP ‘Homefront’, produced by Breaks Co-op front man Andy Lovegrove is available on Beard Museum, an Oxford label. See them play to fans at:

Fopp Oxford, Saturday 3rd February at 2pm

Grammy-nominated pop-punk act Bowling For Soup play to support the release of their ninth full-length album, The Great Burrito Extortion Case. They reckon: “It’s the best album anyone will release this year. It’s got hits! It’s got hooks! And it has more undiluted HAPPINESS per song than should be legally allowed by law.” Check out the happy vibes at:

Fopp Tottenham Court Road, Mon 5th Feb, at 7pm

Fopp are pleased to announce that the legendary Fairport Convention, a firm favourite of John Peel, will launch the brand new album, Sense of Occasion, with a free in-store gig at Fopp’s flagship store at Tottenham Court Road in London.

The band first formed in 1967 in a house called Fairport, giving birth to a name that has endured for four decades. The band has been credited with virtually inventing folkrock and going on to establish British folkrock as a distinct and influential genre. Fairport Convention won the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2002 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Today, Fairport Convention is still one of the busiest bands around and still packs venues on its frequent tours across Britain. See them live:

Fopp, Tottenham Court Road, London, Monday 12th February at 7pm

Long Island band Bayside release their album The Walking Wounded on 5th February 2007. The new album is everything their legions of devotees adore about them – stunning melodies, killer hooks and a delicious unpredictability that is a welcome breath of fresh air. And don’t be misled by the title - the overall theme of the band’s fourth release on Victory Records, produced by Shep Goodman and Kenny Gioia (Head Automatica, Hall & Oates), is not one of negativity. Rather, it’s about overcoming the emotional and physical scars in life, a reflection on survivors. See them perform a Valentine’s Day special at:

Fopp Tottenham Court Road, London on Wednesday 14th February at 7pm

Innovative Italian acoustic guitarist Antonio Forcione will be touring fopp stores across the UK in February. Hailed as ‘the Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar’ he is a charasmaitic and inventive performer with 13 top albums already under his belt.

Antonio’s innovative approach to life has led him into the realm of music comedy, where he successfully blends the two elements, winning him a ‘Best Spirit of the Fringe’ award at the Edinburgh Festival in 2001. He has performed at music and comedy festivals around the world including Glastonbury, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Womad and the Singapore Arts Festival. See him at:

Fopp Brighton, Thursday 15th February at 2pm
Fopp Canterbury, Sat 17th Feb, at 2pm
Fopp Manchester, Wed 21st Feb at 2pm
Fopp Union St Glasgow, Thursday 22nd Feb at 2pm

Scottish five-piece The Grim Northern Social, described by critics as ‘the bastard sons of working class heroes’ will be performing at a series of free gigs on a homecoming tour of Fopps in Scotland. Catch them at:

Mon 26th February, Fopp Union St, Glasgow at 16:30
Wed 28th February, Fopp Edinburgh Rose St, at 17:00
Thurs 1st March, Fopp Dundee, at 12:00
Thurs 1st March, Fopp Aberdeen, at 17:00
Fri 2nd March, Fopp East Kilbride, at 17:00

Fopp’s flagship Tottenham Court Rd store is now home to a fully licensed venue/bar and café area, where you can grab a coffee and wind-down in Fopp’s café area or enjoy a drink or two at the bar. These bands are now part of the institution that is Fopp in-stores - Dirty Pretty Things, The Kooks, The Mystery Jets and Hot Chip have all played at Fopp stores in recent times. Fopp’s ability to provide a platform for cutting edge bands to play to fans across its stores is being developed all the time. Now that there are even more Fopp stores there’ll be even more music…

Please be aware: Fopp’s in-store gigs are occasionally subject to change. Full and latest listings, along with more information on all other Fopp news are always available from www.fopp.co.uk Entry to some in-stores may be limited. Wristbands can be collected from host stores on the day of the gig to guarantee entry.

“It’s easy to see why The Noisettes have been afforded the patronage of the likes of Bloc Party - they share the same sonic adventurousness, urgency and awareness of modern life; but that’s where all comparisions end. The Noisettes are very much forging their own trail.” (DrownedinSound.com)

“Singer Shingai manages to encompass the power of Kathleen Hanna, the zany grace of Kate Bush and the dynamics of Jack White, while sounding 100% original.” (Glasswerk.co.uk)

“…in lead singer Shingai Shoniwa they have a genuinely charismatic frontwoman…names like P J Harvey, White Stripes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were easily brought to mind.” (MusicOMH.com)

“Definitely a band to watch out for in 2007.” (NeuMagazine.co.uk)

“…a band who beat their contemporaries in every conceivable category.” (PlayLouder.com)
