Amazon rumoured to be selling MP3’s by next month

tagged , , , , , , , and

CMU claim that “Word has it Amazon’s previously reported MP3 based download service will launch next month. Word also has it that MP3s will be sold via the existing Amazon interface, rather than via some snazzy iTunes rip off. Which sounds like a damn good idea to me - I’ve never understood why so many retailers split their physical and digital sales platforms, like no one person would ever want to buy both a CD and an MP3. The final word on the matter is that Amazon will allow variable pricing (something the majors are increasingly pushing for) but that they are very committed to only selling in MP3 format, and are willing to wait for Universal, Warner and SonyBMG to catch up in that regard. Good for them.”

Hopefully they will be DRM free, we will have to hope, wait and see

Update. Looks like no DRM!  Excellent

New site for 7″ news

tagged , , , , , , , , and

With current indications showing that the vinyl format may very well outlive the CD, a company called Index7 has just launched a new website dedicated to new 7″ vinyl releases. With many 7″ releases these days being of the limited edition variety, Index7 hopes to keep collectors up to date with releases so that users can get their hands on them before they all sell out.

Founder Nick Levine told CMU: “I started Index7 out of frustration more than anything. I’ve always collected 7″ singles but was getting very irritated at the lack of information available to people like me who wanted to buy them.  I spoke to a lot of record companies and received very positive feedback about starting a dedicated 7″ single resource, so Index7 was born. It is a very easy platform to navigate and use and we already have over 30 labels signed up including the likes of Moshi Moshi, White Heat, City Rockers, Loog and Transgressive among others, with more joining every day.”

For the time being the site will provide news and leads rather than selling 7″ releases itself - links will be provided to independent retailers where users can order their copies.

An update from Rumraket Records

tagged , , , , , , , and

It’s with great pleasure to announce that what might be two of the best all-female bands in the world today, amiina and Taxi Taxi! soon will release music on Rumraket.

First one up is amiina, in fact their new 3 track single Seoul is already available online at iTunes, eMusic and other sites! Very soon we will also release the single on 12″ vinyl with an extra special 4th track by Frakkur (www.last.fm/music/Frakkur)! The vinyl is expected late January/early February and we will do our best to make them widely available across Europe. amiina are known for their work with Sigur Ros. As a string quartet they have recorded on ( ) and Takk and also toured the world together with the Icelandic giants.

When amiina is amiina they make beautiful orchestrated chamber-pop music and it wont be long before there is no need to mention Sigur Ros when talking about amiina!

Top 10 Christmas YouTube Videos Revealed

tagged , , , , , , , , and

LONDON: Tuesday 19th December 2006.

Christmas on the Internet is a time for lewd humor, kitsch, nostalgia and musical whimsy. At any rate, that’s the conclusion to be drawn from this year’s top 10 most viral Christmas videos, according to Web chart company ViralVideoChart.com.

Justin Timberlake’s SNL skit has beaten Larry the Cable Guy and the cast of Scrubs to this year’s top spot. Timberlake’s lewd musical skit, offering tips on a homemade Christmas gift, trumped both Daniel Whitney’s set of redneck carols and the surreal Charlie Brown mashup, produced for a Scrubs cast Christmas party three years ago.

At number four is a slick depiction of the secret and violent life of Gangsta Santa, leaving dead kids and ponies’ heads in his wake, while number five sees animated Indian popstar Boymongoose take on Bollywood hunks, corrupt sports stars, nosey inlaws and a totally insufficient dowry in a satirical version of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Number six is the well-loved Christmas Lights Gone Wild. In December 2004. Carson Williams, an electrical engineer from Mason, Ohio, spent several weeks sequencing 88 Light-O-Rama channels to control 16,000 Christmas lights. Two years later the video of this holiday lighting spectacular has been viewed over a million times on YouTube.

The final four videos on the chart are all musical numbers. Billy Idol musters a restrained version of White Christmas, Mariah Carey and Wham! entertain with their seasonal standards, while supermodel Heidi Klum goes all out for a kitsch winter wonderland.

Scott Button, CEO, ViralVideoChart.com says: “Large quantities of extended family plus a goodly measure of alcohol can make Christmas a stressful time. We all need a release, and YouTube’s top Christmas clips have been providing relief to millions.”

Dandelion Radio continue Peel’s Festive 50 - Vote now!

tagged , , , , , and

The people behind an internet radio station established in the memory of John Peel have announced they will be continuing Peel’s traditional Festive Fifty this year.

Organisers of Dandelion Radio explain: “John Peel started the Festive Fifty in 1976 as a listeners’ poll of the best tracks of the year. It wasn’t held the next year, resumed by popular demand in 1978, and has been held every year since, with an extra ‘All Time Festive 50′ in 1999. Radio One has decided not to continue with it this year, but some of John Peel’s old programme team, feeling that the tradition should be kept alive, have asked internet station Dandelion Radio to take over the sleigh reins and keep it going. So this year, the Festive 50 continues on www.dandelionradio.com”.

Anyone can vote in the poll by visiting the below page on the station’s website
